Some of us grew up with dogs in our lives from day one, while others saw the dogs on television and movies and longed to have one of their own. Having a furry best friend by our side was all we wanted. And some of the most amazing fictional dogs come from cartoons. These dogs were the cream of the crop – man’s best friend at his finest. And if we’re being honest? We still daydream about those cartoon dogs being real. Here are 6 cartoon dogs we would love to have as pets in real life.

Snoopy

As perhaps the most famous of man’s best friends, Snoopy is a beagle after everyone’s heart. Made famous by the Peanuts comic strip created by Charles Schultz, America has fallen in love with his goofy personality and wild antics. Snoopy is a dog who plays by his own rules – a trait that often frustrates his owner Charlie Brown.

Having Snoopy for a pet would be more like having a younger sibling. Snoopy doesn’t need constant attention the way other dogs might. He’s perfectly content entertaining himself. Whether he’s fighting off the Red Baron, or teasing Lucy for the hundredth time, Snoopy is about as independent as they come.

But of course, Snoopy still considers Charlie Brown his number one. No matter how much Snoopy likes to be independent, he will always be there for his owner in the end. And in the words of Charles Schultz, “Happiness is a warm puppy.”

Odie

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Odie from the Garfield comic strip is not much of an independent thinker. In fact, he’s not much of a thinker at all. Odie is lovably stupid and often falls victim to Garfield’s teasing – though he never seems to realize it.

If Odie were your pet, you probably would never stop laughing. His goofy nature always seems to get him into silly situations. But Odie never seems to stop looking on the bright side! What he lacks in intelligence he certainly makes up for in charm.

Though Garfield is the star of Jim Davis’ beloved comics, Odie is the slapstick comedian we all adore. And while Garfield may show his affections is strange ways, Odie still keeps on smiling!

Lady and Tramp

You can’t have Lady without having Tramp – and why would you want anything less? There’s nothing sweeter than two dogs who really love each other. And this canine couple from Disney’s Lady and the Tramp is about as cute as they come.

A wealthy Cocker Spaniel falls for a rugged street mutt in this Romeo and Juliet for dog lovers. If this adorable dog couple lived in your house, you’d probably be taking way too many pictures. The sweet snuggles, the sharing of food, and of course the (eventual) four puppies would be almost too much to handle!

Owning Lady and Tramp, you would also have to be okay with having plenty of other dogs around. They both have lots of friends! But if you’re a true dog lover, the more, the merrier!

Clifford

Any kid who read Clifford the Big Red Dog fantasized at least once about owning a huge dog as a pet. And Clifford is the perfect gentle giant. His loyalty to Emily is unparalleled, and he’s always willing to lend a helping hand.

With Clifford as your pet, the possibilities are endless. Looking for a backyard tire swing? Clifford’s tail will help you out! Want to be in the town parade? You don’t even need to build a float! And above all, with all that red fur, Clifford makes the best cuddle buddy in town.

Norman Bridwell, the author of the Clifford the Big Red Dog series created a lovable giant that every kid dreams of. If only he could really grow that big!

Gromit

If you’ve ever seen Nick Park’s Wallace and Gromit clay animation movies, you know that if it weren’t for Gromit the dog, Wallace would never get anything done. Though he never talks, Gromit can speak volumes with just a facial expression. Although it would seem that Wallace never gets the hint.

With Gromit as your pet, you can be sure he’d get you out of a scrape or two. Though Gromit acts impatient with Wallace’s stupidity, Gromit will always be there to get his human out of a jam – or at least he’ll try! And at the end of the day, Gromit just wants to sit back with his newspaper and a cup of tea. He’s a dog with sophisticated taste.

Gromit will surely get you out of any conundrum you find yourself in – or at least stay by your side through the whole thing. What are best friends for?

Dug

Of all the dogs we’ve listed so far, Dug from the movie UP is the only one who can talk to his owners. Clearly, that’s a huge bonus! We’ve all imagined what our dogs might sound like with human voices, and Dug brings that dream to reality.

Dug would be an extremely loyal pet. Even when he worked for Charles Muntz in the Disney/Pixar film, he was eager to please. Dug is also easily distracted – by birds, squirrels, tennis balls, you name it! His distractibility would give you hours of entertainment.

It’s hard not to fall in love with this goofball. Though he may not be the fastest, fiercest, or smartest of dogs, he certainly is the most fun. Dug, we’d be happy to be your master!

Senior Dog Care Tips: 4 Ways To Care For Your Aging Dog

The American Veterinary Medical Association is proud to say that as animal medicine continues to improve, pet’s lives continue to get longer. But this brings on brand new challenges for dog owners. You may have finally mastered puppy training, and gotten into good habits during your dog’s adult years, but caring for a senior dog can be a whole new ball game. On top of that, each dog ages differently and comes with their own set of potential health issues and ailments. How can you make the canine aging process smooth for both of you? We’ve come up with 4 tips to keep in mind as your dog heads into their golden years.

4 Ways To Care For Your Senior Dog

1. Increase Your Visits to the Vet

Your dog may not want to hear this, but as they age, they should be seeing the veterinarian more often. Annual vet visits are perfect for young and healthy dogs, but senior dogs may need to see the doctor twice a year. Talk to your veterinarian about when you should start increasing visits.

Frequent visits to the vet provide an opportunity for early detection of any health problems your dog may be experiencing. The AVMA states that exams given to senior pets are often more in-depth than those given to younger dogs. Often these exams will include dental cleaning, blood work, and specific examinations that check for common diseases in older dogs.

Many of the diseases that dogs develop in their old age are similar to diseases humans develop. Cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, joint disease, senility, and simple weakness are all common problems in aging dogs. If you suspect your dog may be suffering from any of these ailments, always consult your veterinarian first. Make an appointment, and have your dog checked out. Your veterinarian will be able to make a proper diagnosis and provide you with the necessary canine-friendly medications.

2. Watch Your Dog’s Behavior

When humans feel unwell, we are able to vocally express our physical pains and ailments. Dogs are unable to communicate with us through verbal language, but they can tell us a lot through their behavior. As your dog ages, start to pay close attention to their daily behavior. Keep an eye out for abnormalities and differences.

The AVMA lists several behavioral changes that owners of senior dogs should watch for, including disorientation, decreased interaction with humans, increased anxiety, and house soiling. If these or other behavioral changes are not consistent with your dog’s usual nature, it is wise to visit a veterinarian for a check-up. These behavioral differences can be subtle, so be sure to watch closely.

Other more obvious behavioral changes include decreased appetite, increased thirst, vomiting, and physical weakness. These ailments also can be a sign of illness in your senior dog. Consult with your veterinarian if you are concerned by your dog’s behavior.

3. Change the Exercise Routine

It’s common for senior dogs to experience increased physical weakness or even to suffer from arthritis. But one of the most important things you can do for your dog as they age is to maintain a moderate exercise routine.

If you’ve exercised your dog regularly their whole life, you may start to notice them slowing down naturally with age. Pay attention to this, and decrease the level of activity for your pup. Perhaps you used to climb mountains together? Take flat walks in the woods instead. Were your walks with your dog over an hour long? Scale them back. Small changes like this allow your dog to maintain a healthy level of activity without overexerting themselves.

In an article by NPR, Nicholas Dodman of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine recommends moderate exercise due to potential heart and lung deterioration. But the key to senior dog exercise is moderation. Dodman emphasizes that maintaining a healthy weight for your senior dog is important. Excess weight can put a strain on your dog’s already tired joints. Short walks, swimming, and rolling the ball during fetch instead of throwing are all great ways to moderate your dog’s activity.

4. Make Your Home Senior Friendly

Just like senior humans, modifications to the home environment can make a huge difference in the quality of life for your senior dog. One major thing to stay aware of is temperature. Senior dogs become very sensitive to temperature extremes. It’s important to keep your home temperature in a comfortable state. You should also monitor your dog’s time spent outdoors. Too much exposure to the extreme cold and extreme heat can be harmful to a senior dog.

Another factor to consider for your dog is general access to their basic needs. If your dog has trouble with their joints and general movement, make sure their water and food bowls are on the first floor. If your dog’s favorite couch or bed is too high for them to jump to, a small set of steps can be very helpful. You may want to also consider adding a ramp to the entrance of your home if the entryway stairs are steep. These modifications are similar to those we may provide for senior humans. Talk to your veterinarian if your dog is having specific difficulties.

Remember, aging is as much a part of life for dogs as it is for people. The best thing you can do for your friend is to embrace the process. You know your dog best. Make them as happy and comfortable as they can be in their old age. And continue to enjoy the journey.

You want to be the best dog owner you can be. But sometimes you don’t always have time to take your dog for a long hike or on a day trip to the dog beach. It can be tough – especially with high energy dogs – to keep up with your furry friend. Here are 5 quick and easy ways you can exercise your dog, and still fit everything else into your busy schedule.

5 Fun Activites For You And Your Dog

Throw the Ball!

If you don’t have time to go for a long walk, this is probably the first trick up your sleeve. And with good reason! This activity gets your dog moving without a lot of effort on your part. Plus it’s a great opportunity to bond with your dog.

A lot of dogs take to playing fetch very naturally. But what if your dog shows no interest? Or maybe your dog loves to fetch the ball but isn’t so great at bringing it back. The AKC has a few recommendations on how you can teach your dog to fetch.

The goal when teaching your dog to enjoy playing fetch is showing them that interacting with their toy will be rewarding and fun for them. The best way to do this is to use their favorite treats. When working with your dog to teach them fetch, work slowly and patiently. Start by rewarding your dog even when they simply look at their favorite toy. Then work your way up to physical interactions with the toy, continuing to reward your dog with food.

Eventually, you can do this exercise with a variety of different toys. Soon your dog will learn that it’s not about the reward they get from one toy, but the reward they get when playing with you!

This foundation of teaching your dog to have fun with you, not just the toy, is the basis of also getting your dog to return the toy to you. Follow the guidelines the AKC lays out, and you and your dog will be fetching like old pros in no time.

Run Your Dog Up and Down the Stairs

Some days you can’t even be bothered to leave the house. Maybe you had to take a sick day today. Maybe the weather is just too darn miserable for you and your dog to go out for more than a bathroom break. Whatever the reason, try using a toy almost all of us already have available – stairs!

Remember those fetch skills you and your dog learned? Put them to good use! Stand at the top of the stairs with your dog and their favorite toy. Throw the toy to the bottom of the stairs and let your dog run down to retrieve it. Then, call them back! Your dog will have to run back up the stairs to bring the toy back to you. Repeat this only a few times, and your dog will be twice as tired as they would be after a regular fetch game. This method of exercise is so effective, even Cesar Millan recommends it!

But maybe your dog isn’t so great at fetch yet. Not to worry! Playing on the stairs can be a great way to tire your dog out and practice their tricks and skills. Try practicing your dog’s recall skills using the staircase. Tell your dog to stay at the bottom of the stairs. Walk to the top and wait – making sure your dog waits at the bottom! When you are at the top of the stairs, call your dog to come to you. They will have to run up the stairs to obey. Repeat this training exercise a few times to tire your dog out and sharpen their skills!

Use a Flirt Pole

This cool toy is not quite what it sounds like. So don’t click away yet! We promise you, a flirt pole is a real dog toy – and a great one too!

a flirt pole consist of a stick that the owner holds, a string hanging off the end of that stick, and a toy attached to the end of the string. Although it may sound like an enlarged cat toy, dogs go crazy for it. See for yourself the styles that they come in.

The goal of the flirt pole is to wave the toy that is attached to a string in front of your dog and encourage them to chase it. The idea is that you are teasing your dog with the toy (Get it? Flirt?), and your dog will get excited and want to chase it. But don’t let them catch it! If your dog never catches the toy, you can spend lots of time – indoors or out – tiring your dog out with this simple game of keep away.

A flirt pole taps into that same instinct that many dogs have to chase a ball, with the added fun of never being able to catch it. We recommend trying this game in an outdoor space before testing it indoors. Some dogs go pretty wild for this game, and may knock a few things over! It’s a good idea to see how your dog reacts to it in a safe and open environment before introducing new elements.

Catch the Water Spray

This is a fantastic game to play on a hot summer day. And all you need is a clean spray bottle and clean water!

Now some dogs get a bit nervous around a spray bottle, so this may not be for every pup out there. But many dogs absolutely love trying to catch the spray of water that comes from the bottle. Additionally, this is a great way to keep your dog cool on long, hot summer days.

To find out if your dog will like the spray bottle game, start small. Spray a bit of water to the side of your dog to see how they react. Don’t spray directly at them yet! This could scare them away from the game. Watch your dog’s response to the water as it passes next to them. If they appear curious, you can go a little further. Spray a bit of water near your dog’s mouth to see if they will try to catch it. Be sure to aim low! You don’t want to accidentally get the water in your dog’s eyes, as this could also turn your dog off to the game.

Give it a few tries and watch how your dog reacts. They may try to catch the water right away, or they may be a bit confused by it at first. If your dog seems to be getting nervous and tries to move away from the water, don’t push it! You don’t want to scare your dog or make them nervous.

If your dog loves the water spray and is having a great time trying to catch it, now is your chance to play with where you spray the water. Spray far away and get your dog to run to catch it. Spray up in the air to encourage your dog to jump up. Have fun with it! This game is great for your dog and hilarious for you. Just in time for summer!

Blow Bubbles

Similar to the water spray, dogs will love to chase and catch the bubbles as they gently float to the ground! This is also a great alternative for a dog who is nervous around the spray bottle. Bubbles are slower and more gentle. Any dog can play!

Supplies for this game are pretty simple: any bottle of children’s bubbles will do. If you like, you can buy you and your dog a bubble machine for extra fun! But you may find that your dog doesn’t like the taste of soap. Lucky for you, there are alternatives for the concerned pet owner.

The Pomsky has been causing a bit of a stir on the Internet in the past couple of years. A cross between a Siberian husky and a Pomeranian, this “little wolf” appears to be an ideal breed for dog owners who want the charm of a large dog with the convenience of a small dog. But the breed is very new – only a few years old! – And there is a lot of misinformation that can get thrown around about these adorable little pups. So are Pomsky’s really everything they are cracked up to be? Well, the Pomsky Club of America certainly thinks so. And they have all the information you need to set the record straight. Here are six things you should know before you consider purchasing this designer breed.

6 Fun Facts About Pomskys

There are two different types

Pomskies can actually be purchased in one of two varieties: the 50/50 variety or the 25/75 variety. The 50/50 variety of Pomsky is pretty straight forward. Puppies that are born 50/50 have a purebred Siberian husky parent and a purebred Pomeranian parent. This is the variety most people think of when they think of a Pomsky.

The trouble with a 50/50 Pomsky is that their characteristics cannot be fully guaranteed. Certain traits such as height, weight, coloring, and temperament can show up differently in different puppies – even within the same litter! It’s important to consider this when purchasing a 50/50 Pomsky. Be open to fun surprises!

The other variety of Pomsky is a 25/75. These puppies are bred using one 50/50 parent and one purebred Pomeranian parent. A litter born from these parents will display Pomeranian traits more dominantly, while still exhibiting the desirable traits found in a husky. Breeders have a bit more control over what the puppies will grow up to look like and behave like.

There is No Way to Guarantee Their Size

That perfectly petite Pomsky photo you saw isn’t always what your dog will grow up to be. Because the breed is so new, breeders are still working diligently to create that ideal Pomsky look. But as stated before, puppies can express the traits of parents very differently.

50/50 Pomskies tend to vary much more than the 25/75 variety. A 50/50 Pomsky will grow up to be between 15 and 25 pounds, though some can be bigger or smaller than that. A 25/75 Pomsky will grow up to be between 10 and 15 pounds. Even with these typical weight ranges, puppies can still grow up to be bigger or smaller than the given range. These variables are typical when perfecting a new dog breed. It’s important to understand the size differences before purchasing a Pomsky. Choose the variety that will best suit your lifestyle and capabilities.

Their Temperament Can Also Vary

As with size, the personality traits of a Siberian husky and a Pomeranian can be expressed differently in their offspring. A Siberian husky is traditionally very independent and full of high energy. These qualities are a lot of fun for the active and experienced dog owner. On the other hand, a Pomeranian is very much a lap dog. They are family oriented and don’t need much exercise.

An ideal Pomsky will express these traits equally, displaying a moderate amount of energy and independence, while still being loving and devoted to their family. When the traits express themselves in this way, Pomskies make great family dogs, being ideal for older children and their families.

Since they are still perfecting the breed, sometimes the Pomsky personality can really vary. A Pomsky may behave very similarly to a Siberian husky, acting very independently and needing lots of training and exercise. Or they may swing the other way, and be very attached to their family like a Pomeranian. It’s important to invest in a good training program for your Pomsky right from the beginning. This will ensure you develop a good relationship with your dog, helping you get to know your Pomsky’s quirks.

They are expensive

With all this work going into the creation of a perfect Pomsky, the price tag is very high. While the price can vary depending on lineage and other factors, most Pomskies cost at least $1,000, and typically fall in the $2,000-$4,000 range.

While this may seem pretty steep, it’s important to remember that when perfecting a new dog breed there are a lot of safety concerns a breeder must stay aware of. A lot of money goes into safely and healthfully breeding puppies – from vet bills, to feeding and beyond. As more is learned about proper breeding of a Pomsky, the price tag may very well go down.

All Pomsky’s have a Pomeranian Father and a Husky Mother

When breeding two very different dogs, it’s always important to consider the safety of the parents. If a female Pomeranian was used to carry the puppies, the potential size of the babies could endanger her life. This is why breeders only use Siberian husky mothers. Their large stature ensures that they can safely carry the puppies through to term.

More discerning dog lovers may be wondering how two very different dogs breed together at all! Well, the answer is artificial insemination.

For the safety of both dogs, artificial insemination should be the only way the mother gets pregnant with her puppies. This method is also the only way to ensure the mother actually does get pregnant.

Miley Cyrus is well known for having a lot of pets, but one of her cutest additions is her Shetland Sheepdog named Emu. Cyrus got Emu in 2014 shortly after the passing of her dog Floyd. Since then Emu has been getting a lot of love on Cyrus’s Instagram. Emu’s full name is actually Emu Coyne Cyrus, name after Miley Cyrus’s friend Wayne Coyne, who is the front man for the Flaming Lips. Emu’s long, beautiful fur has that hippie vibe that Cyrus is so proud of within herself. A match made in heaven!

Justin Bieber’s Dog Esther

Justin Bieber’s little dog named Esther is simply the cutest little ball of fluff on four legs! Of course, Bieber himself agrees. Esther gets plenty of love on Bieber’s instagram account, but Esther has a few other accounts dedicated to her as well. You can follow this Instagram account that’s devoted just to Esther, or this Twitter account with pictures of the adorable pup. Esther could make a “Belieber” out of anyone!

Lady Gaga’s French Bulldogs Asia and Koji

The cuteness is almost too much to handle with these two. Lady Gaga’s French bulldogs light up her Instagram with dress up photos and squishy faces. For a while, Asia was Lady Gaga’s only dog. When Nick Jonas was performing on Broadway, he even moved Elvis to the city so they could be together and explore New York. Aww!

Dog Grooming Basics: 4 Tips to Keep Your Dog’s Coat Well Groomed

Admit it: you love it when people compliment you on how cute your dog is. You’d like your dog to be the cutest dog in the neighborhood. So how can you keep them looking fresh?

The number one way to keep your dog looking in tip-top shape is to care for their coat. Fur is one of the first things people notice when admiring a dog – and it’s what everyone loves to pet! Here are four ways to keep your dog’s fur looking sharp.

4 Ways To Keep Your Dog’s Coat Well-Groomed

Brush Your Dog’s Coat

The most basic things a dog owner can do to keep their pet’s fur fresh and clean is to brush regularly. Brushing your dog’s coat helps prevent tangles, removes dead and shedding hair, encourages healthy oils to spread throughout their fur, and is a great way to check for fleas and ticks, according to the ASPCA. But how often should you brush? Well, this depends largely on what kind of fur your dog has. And with so many different styles of comb out there, it can be hard to determine what’s right for your dog. Here is a quick guide:

Your dog has a smooth, short coat – This type of fur should be brushed once a week with a rubber-bristled comb. Rubber bristles are all it takes to get dead fur and dirt off of your dog’s short coat. The rubber is also more gentle on skin that might be close to the bristles or fully exposed. Look for a grooming glove that has bristles on one side and a polishing cloth on the other. Polishing your dog’s fur will give it that sleek look and extra shine!
Your dog has a short, dense coat – Regular brushing should be done once a week to prevent tangles and remove dead fur. Since the hair is thicker, the ASPCA recommends using two different styles of brush. Start with a slicker-style brush to detangle any knots. Finish off with a bristle brush to remove the dead hair. During shedding season, use a rake-style brush to pull out the excess hair that is falling out.
Your dog has a long silky coat – Fur like this can get tangled very easily. This will require daily brushing using a slicker brush to remove any tangles. Finishing off with a bristle brush helps to smooth out the coat and remove any dead hairs.
Your dog has a wiry coat – Even fur that doesn’t shed requires some TLC. If your dog’s coat is short, brush once or twice a week with a bristle brush to maintain smoothness. If your dog’s coat is longer and prone to tangles, brush with a slicker brush to remove knots. Finish off with a bristle brush to smooth the hair.

No matter what kind of fur your dog has, we recommend that you always comb your dog with a fine-tooth brush or comb after an outdoor adventure. This will not only remove any loose dirt but also will help you catch ticks early, before they can cause any problems.

Unless your pet is getting very dirty regularly, the ASPCA recommends bathing your dog only once every three months. Excessive bathing can remove all the wonderful, natural oils your dog’s skin produces. These oils make your dog’s fur look healthy and shiny. No need to wash those away!

There are about as many kinds of shampoos as there are dogs, so it’s up to you to shop around and find one you like! Never use human shampoo on a dog, however. Some human shampoos may contain chemicals or fragrances that could irritate a dog’s skin and cause a rash. It’s always best to use a shampoo that is specially formulated for dogs. Ask your vet for a recommendation that best suits your dog.

Before a bath, it’s always a good idea to brush away any excess fur and get rid of any knots. Once only the healthy fur remains, use lukewarm water to wet your dog from head to toe. Be careful not to get any water in their eyes, ears, and nose! Massage the shampoo into your dog’s fur slowly and gently, similar to your own hair. Rinse your dog thoroughly, and towel dry by patting them down. Now step back before your dog shakes that water off!

Dog Hygiene Tips: 4 Easy Ways to Keep Your Dog’s Teeth Clean

Between feeding, playtime, grooming, and training, keeping your dog’s teeth clean may be the last thing on your mind. But regularly cleaning your dog’s teeth and gums is very important. According to the ASPCA, regular maintenance prevents the buildup of plaque, which can harden into tartar. Just like humans, dogs can experience gingivitis, receding gum lines, and even loss of teeth!

Many veterinarians suggest oral checkups for dogs once a year. But these can be very expensive since many vets recommend the dog be under anesthesia for a proper cleaning. How can you maintain good oral health in your dog without breaking the bank? Here are four easy ways to do so.

4 Ways to Keep Your Dog’s Teeth Sparkling Clean

1. Brush, Brush, Brush!

The very best way to keep your dog’s teeth clean is by brushing. The ASPCA recommends brushing two or three times a week to protect against gum disease. A new brushing routine can take a bit of getting used to – for you and your dog! But there are a few ways to make the process easier:

Always use dog appropriate products. Human toothpaste and toothbrushes won’t cut it! Special canine toothpaste is formulated to be digestible for dogs – and tastes better too! Dog toothbrushes are also smaller than human toothbrushes, and are designed to be gentle. Choose products that are recommended by the Veterinary Oral Health Council or by your trusted veterinarian.
Slowly introduce your dog to the idea of brushing. The ASPCA recommends starting your dog on a brushing routine by first massaging their lips and gums with your fingers. This will get your dog used to the sensation of having something moving in their mouth. Next you want to introduce the toothpaste to your dog. Using the same circular motions, place a bit of toothpaste on the end of your finger and massage it on to your dog’s teeth and gums. The last step is to introduce the toothbrush. Brush with a little bit of toothpaste, using circular motions along the outside of the teeth.
Be patient! For some dogs, this process may take a long time to get used to. But take your time. And be aware that most plaque buildup occurs on the outside of the teeth. There is no need to start brushing all sides of the teeth if your dog is feeling uncomfortable. Ease into it, and wait until your dog is used to the sensation.

2. Use “Doggie Mouthwash”

Yes it really exists – and is very easy to use! Canine formulated mouthwash is great for fighting plaque and bad breath. Dog mouthwash actually comes in three different forms, all a bit different from the human variety.

Water additive: A water additive dog mouthwash can be poured right into your dog’s water bowl. This is similar to the fluoride treated water that humans drink. Your dog can drink their water as they normally would – and will never know their teeth are being cleaned!
Oral spray: With a spray formula, simply spritz the solution into your dog’s mouth following the recommended dosage. The spray then works to dissolve the plaque buildup.
Oral gel: An oral gel is applied in a similar fashion to brushing, but works the same way a spray does. Choosing a mouthwash comes down to your personal preference and your dog’s preferences and temperament. When choosing between a water additive, spray, or gel, always choose a product that is recommended by either the Veterinary Oral Health Council or by your personal veterinarian.

3. Switch Your Dog’s Food

Maybe your dog isn’t quite ready for really big changes in their oral care routine. Maybe you need to be a little sneakier. Why not try some teeth-friendly food? Some dog foods are actually designed to fight the buildup of plaque and tartar. This is a great additional step for a dog who may take more time getting used to a brushing routine.

Remember to go slowly when introducing your dog to a new food. If you switch a food too quickly, this increases the chances that your dog will experience digestive troubles. Begin by offering the new food to your dog as treats. Get your pup used to – and excited about! – the new flavor you are giving them.

Gradually start mixing the new food in with the old. Start with a small amount on the first day, then day by day add more of the new food and less of the old. This process should take you between seven and ten days. After at least one week, your dog will be eating a full serving of the dental friendly food!

As you follow this process of switching foods, be sure to pay attention to your dog’s bowels. (This is the “fun” part of being a dog owner!) If you notice any major changes that do not subside, consult your veterinarian. And as always, before choosing a new food, ask your vet for their recommendations.

4. Chewing on Treats

You may be thinking, “Aren’t treats supposed to be bad for your teeth?” And while that may be true for human treats, this isn’t necessarily the case for dog treats. Many dog chews are now formulated to be good for a dog’s teeth, and help fight the buildup of both plaque and tartar. Plus a dog chew will keep your pup busy for hours!

Dental chews come in all varieties. Some treats have a strong flavor; some less so. Some are designed for small dogs, while others are designed for large dogs. The great thing about treats and chews is you can experiment! Take some time testing out new flavors, and switch things up to keep dental care exciting and fun for your dog.

But while a wide variety of chews can be fun and exciting, not all are created equal. It’s important to do a bit of research to find out which ones will work best for you. Ask your vet about their favorite dental chews. Or check out your local pet supply shop to see what they recommend.
