Health & Longevity

Average Life Span: 12-15 years
The Jack A Poo is a hybrid breed of the Poodle and the Jack Russell Terrier. This breed has some health concerns that you need to be aware of. When it comes to selecting your puppy, you should work with a reputable breeder to ensure that these diseases and conditions are weeded out of the lines. Some of the health conditions you need to be aware of include bloat, Addison’s Disease, epilepsy, Cushing’s Disease, eye problems, deafness, hypothyroidism, Von Willebrand’s Disease, and patellar luxation.

Bloat is a condition that occurs when too much air enters into the stomach, which causes it to expand and place pressure on all of the surrounding organs. This condition is fatal when it is not caught and treated in time. It is believed that dogs get bloat when they swallow too much air, which can occur when the dog eats too quickly, drink too quickly, or becomes excited soon after eating and drinking.

Addison’s Disease may affect your Jack A Poo and is a disease that alters the function of the adrenal gland. When the adrenal gland cannot properly function, there will be a lack of corticosteroids in your dog’s body.

Seizures or epilepsy is a condition that can affect your Jack A Poo. This condition does not usually present itself until your puppy is older and has reached two years of age. The severity of the seizures can vary from violent to very mild.

Low cortisone levels may be present in your Jack A Poo and are often caused by Cushing’s Disease. This disease is characterized by a low level or cortisone in the body. Your dog may exhibit signs such as muscle weakness, increased thirst, nervous system disorders, high blood pressure, or a bulging abdomen.

Eye problems can occur in any breed of dog and it is important that you monitor the health of your Jack A Poo’s eyes and alert your veterinarian if you notice any issues. Eye problems can range from a mild infection to blindness.

It is possible for your Jack A Poo to become deaf later on in life. Typically, deafness occurs over time as your dog ages, but your puppy may be born this way as well.

If you notice that your puppy has trouble gaining weight or is obese, he or she may have a problem with his or her thyroid. Hypothyroidism is a condition that can be fatal if not cared for properly.

A blood disorder called Von Willebrand’s Disease may be inherited and can occur in your Jack A Poo. This disease is characterized by platelets that do not clot due to a lack of proteins to bind them together.

Lastly, patellar luxation can cause lameness in your pet’s limbs and happens when a knee dislocation occurs. Your puppy will visibly be in pain if this is the case.

The Jack A Poo’s life expectancy is 12 to 15 years.

Temperament & Train-ability

The Jack A Poo is often referred to as a dog that is intelligent and loving. You will find that your Jack A Poo has a good mix of the best qualities from each of the parent breeds. With an even temperament and a willingness to please, your Jack A Poo will be a great companion.

This breed makes a good family pet and does well with children and other pets. While he or she is good with kids and pets, it is important to socialize him or her at an early age to prevent any issues later on down the road.

You will find that your Jack A Poo is quite curious and likes to explore your home and may find himself or herself in trouble at times. While independent, you will find that your Jack A Poo winds down and lies in your lap for a lot of cuddles.

This breed is considered to be a good choice for apartment living and only requires a walk of 30 minutes per day.

You will find that your puppy is easy to train and he or she has a willingness to learn and please you the best way he or she can. You want to make sure that you are firm and consistent with commands, but not overpowering, as this will only cause stubbornness in your puppy.

Grooming

Grooming is not a problem and does not require extensive clipping or brushing. In fact, you can brush your Jack A Poo once every couple of days. This breed is not known to shed too much, which means he or she is a good choice for those who have allergies.

You do not have to bathe your Jack A Poo on any set schedule and should only do so when it is truly needed. You want to clean your puppy’s ears once per week to remove any buildup of wax and dirt.

The last grooming need is to trim your pup’s nails. Nails that become too long are painful and can snag or break. A once per month trim is usually enough, but you may need to do it more often depending on how fast your Jack A Poo’s nails grow.

Diet

Your Jack A Poo will eat between 3/4 cup and 1 1/2 cups of food per day and should be fed a high quality brand. You want to avoid wet food, as it does not provide enough nutrients and can lead to obesity in your pup.
