Health & Longevity

Average Life Span: 11-13 years
The Patterdale Terrier is considered to be a healthy breed and the common medical conditions to watch out for include cataracts, cuts and scrapes, and conjunctivitis. This breed is healthier than many other dog breeds, but it is important to work with a reputable breeder to ensure that your puppy is as healthy as possible.

One of the conditions to keep an eye out for includes cataracts. These are often passed down to your pup from the parents, but can also form due to trauma. Cataracts lead to blindness, but in some cases, your pup may be able to have surgery to remove them.

Cuts and scrapes may occur on your pup’s body, especially since he or she likes to go outside and play outdoors. If you notice a cut or scrape, it is important that you clean it thoroughly and protect it from infection. If the cut or scrape is deep or becomes infected, you will need to take your pup to the vet’s office right away.

Conjunctivitis is pink eye in your pup and is usually caused from irritants that are present in the air. Pink eye can cause the eye to swell or become filled with crust due to a buildup of fluid. Sometimes, this condition is brought on due to allergies as well. If you think that your pup has pink eye, you should take him or her to the veterinarian to have it checked out.

The Patterdale Terrier has a life expectancy of 11 to 13 years.

Temperament & Train-ability

The Patterdale Terrier is a curious little pup that will explore and get into things. This pup is brave and will stick his or her nose where it does not belong, so to speak. You must keep an eye on him or her to make sure that he or she does not become too curious.

You will find that this breed is light on their feet and they are a free spirit. They enjoy life and they like to be social with everyone. It is unlikely that your pup will be aggressive at all and you will find that he or she is friendly to everyone.

Your Patterdale Terrier makes a good watch dog and will bark to alert you of intruders or strangers that may approach your home. This breed is extremely happy as a house pet and can adapt to your schedule.

While this breed has a lot of energy, he or she will calm down inside of your house, which is unlike other Terrier breeds. It is important to make sure your pup gets enough exercise outside, meaning walks are a good thing. This breed likes to play so a tennis ball or frisbee will serve him or her well.

This breed is good at hunting and enjoys it, so you should keep an eye on him or her around smaller pets. You should not run into any problems with children or larger pets, as this breed is fairly easy going.

You need to socialize your pup as early as possible to ensure that he or she does not develop any bad behaviors. You may receive some affection and cuddles from your pup, but you do not have to worry about him or her being attached to you at the hip.

Training is relatively easy, but you must remain consistent and firm to ensure that your pup learns what you want him to. You may find that your Patterdale Terrier is stubborn sometimes, but be patient and you will achieve the results you want.

Grooming

Grooming of the Patterdale Terrier is considered to be easy. You only need to brush your pup every couple of days to keep their coat healthy and looking its best.

This breed sheds a minimal amount and only needs a bath when it is absolutely required. When it comes time to bathe your pup, choose a shampoo that is mild and light on the skin.

Your pup’s ears need to be cleaned at least once per week to remove any buildup of dirt or ear wax. When you clean your pup’s ears, make sure to use a cotton ball and a cleansing liquid. You want to avoid using any items that are inserted into your pup’s ears, as this can lead to injury.

Lastly, your pup’s nails will need to be trimmed at least once per month to ensure that they do not grow too long. Nails that are overgrown can be painful and will lead to snags or tears.

Diet

Your Patterdale Terrier will consume anywhere between 1.5 cups to 2 cups of premium dry kibble per day. It is important that you provide your pup with a high-quality food that meets his or her activity level and nutritional needs.

You can feed your pup wet food occasionally, but you do not want to rely on it because it does not provide as many nutrients as dry food and it can lead to obesity, especially when your pup does not receive adequate exercise.
