Health & Longevity

Average Life Span: 10-12 years
The Beauceron is considered to be a healthy breed without many known medical conditions or genetic conditions. While the breed may not have many known ailments, this does not mean that every puppy is free from all medical issues.

Poor breeding can lead to problems with your pup and you want to make sure that you work with a reputable and responsible breeder. If you find that the breeder does not test his or her pups, you may want to think about using someone else who does test and screen the dogs that they breed.

Two major health problems have been reported with this breed, and they include hip dysplasia and bloat.

Hip dysplasia is a serious condition that can affect your puppy and cause problems for him or her later on in life. Hip dysplasia occurs when the socket or hip joint is not properly formed. This is a painful condition, and it can lead to crippling arthritis. If your pup does have hip dysplasia, you may notice that he or she has trouble getting up and down along with walking.

Lastly, bloat is another concern in your Beauceron and is something that you need to keep an eye out for. This condition can turn deadly quick and it is important that you seek out medical treatment right away for it.

Bloat occurs when there is too much gas or air trapped in your pup’s stomach. This causes the stomach to expand and then place pressure on the organs around it. When the organs around it cannot function properly, your pup may suffer from poor blood circulation among other life-threatening symptoms.

The Beauceron has a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Temperament & Train-ability

The Beauceron is known to be a brave pup that is not afraid of much. You will find that while your pup is brave and independent, he or she is also smart and enjoys working and performing for you. This breed is obedient and will listen to your commands. Therefore, if you find that your pup is acting too brave, you can call him or her and he or she will respond quickly.

The Beauceron is often used in law enforcement and works as a police dog because he or she is alert, watchful, and fearless. These qualities also make your pup a wonderful watchdog in your home and you can expect him or her to alert you to any intruders or strangers.

It is important to understand that the Beauceron was bred to be a herding dog and sometimes these instincts will come out, which means that your pup may try to heard you and your family. With the proper training, this behavior can be eliminated.

If you properly socialize your Beauceron, you never have to worry about aggression problems, but without socialization, aggression can become an issue.

Your new pup will enjoy exercising and heading outside to play. A good game of fetch will help tire your pup out. You need to make sure that you provide your new pup with plenty of walks throughout the day and week to help him or her expel built up energy.

The Beauceron is considered somewhat easy to train, but may be a bit difficult at times because he or she may show a stubborn side and may try to herd you. You need to make sure that you are consistent and firm with training to make any progress

Grooming

The Beauceron is considered easy to groom and does not require a lot of time. You should brush your pup’s coat a couple of times per week to remove any tangles and loose hair.

This breed does not need any type of bath schedule and you can bathe him or her when needed. You should make sure that you clean his or her ears once per week to ensure that there is no buildup of debris and ear wax. Routine cleanings will also ensure that ear infections do not become a problem.

In addition to the above, you will need to clip your pup’s nails and keep them at a healthy length. If you are uncomfortable with this, you can take your pet to the groomer and sometimes your vet’s office to have his or her nails trimmed regularly.

Diet

Your Beauceron will consume between 3 cups and 4 cups of food per day. You ideally want to split this amount into two meals and not feed it to your pup all at once.

The best food for your new Beauceron puppy is a high-quality kibble that does not contain any fillers or chemicals. If you are unsure of what brand of food to feed your pup, talk to your veterinarian, who will recommend a brand to you.
