The Wirehaired Vizsla is considered a fairly robust and healthy breed. It is important that you work with a reputable breeder to ensure the health of your pup.

While this breed is considered to be healthy, there are some medical conditions that you need to be aware of. These conditions have been reported in other pups, so it helps to know about them, allowing you to be prepared. These conditions include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, entropion, hypothyroidism, cancer, cataracts, and glaucoma.

Hip and elbow dysplasia are painful conditions for your pup. These conditions affect the elbow or hip joints and sockets. Your pup may have one or both of the conditions. You will be able to determine which one he or she has by identifying the affected limbs. For example, elbow dysplasia affects the front limbs, while hip dysplasia affects the back limbs. Both conditions are painful and lead to arthritis as well as lameness, which can cause your pup trouble when he or she walks and stands.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that may affect your pup. Typically, seizures are not present until about six months of age, but may appear after two years of age. It is possible for your puppy to have seizures younger than six months, but it is not common. If your pup does have a seizure, he or she will have convulsions and may or may not go in and out of consciousness.

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid curls inward and the eyelashes scratch the surface of the eye. This can lead to infection if the scratches are not cared for properly.

Hypothyroidism occurs when there is a problem with your pup’s thyroid. This condition can lead to either weight gain, which results in obesity, or trouble gaining any weight at all. This condition can be corrected with medication.

Cancer is another concern in your Wirehaired Vizsla. You should have your pup screened regularly to ensure that no cancerous cells develop. If any are present, early detection and treatment are critical.

Cataracts affect the eyes in your pup. Your puppy may be born with cataracts, but it is more likely that they will develop over time. Cataracts can sometimes be surgically removed, but otherwise, they can lead to blindness when they are unable to be operated on.

Glaucoma is another eye condition that may affect your Wirehaired Vizsla. This condition occurs when there is too much pressure in the eyes. This condition can also lead to blindness.

The Wirehaired Vizsla has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Temperament & Train-ability

The Wirehaired Vizsla is an energetic pup that likes to track and hunt. In fact, this is a great breed to take on outdoor adventures with you. This breed has a lot of stamina and can walk on different terrains and help you find game out in the woods.

You will find that your pup is extremely sociable, friendly, and outgoing. Your pup is not afraid of much and is not afraid to wag his or her tail in excitement. Grooming

The Wirehaired Vizsla has minimal grooming needs, meaning your pup is easy to care for. You should brush your pup’s coat a few times per week to ensure there are no tangles or mats. You do not have to have your pup’s coat stripped or trimmed.

You will notice that this breed does not shed a lot, which makes him or her a good option for those who do not want to clean up dog hair often.

Your Wirehaired Vizsla only needs a bath when he or she smells or is dirty. When you do bathe him or her, be sure to use a mild shampoo that does not strip the natural oils from the skin.

You also need to make sure you clean your pup’s ears once per week to prevent any infections and trim his or her nails monthly to prevent overgrowth.

Diet

Your Wirehaired Vizsla will consume about 2.5 cups to 3 cups of dry kibble per day. You should feed your pup a high-quality food that is high in nutrients and low in fat to prevent obesity or excessive weight gain.
