Health & Longevity
Average Life Span: 10-14 years
The Havapoo, also known as the Poovanese, is a hybrid breed of the Havanese and the Poodle. These breed does have some major health conditions that can be either inherited or genetic and it is important for you to work with a breeder if you want the healthiest pup possible.
Some of the health conditions to keep an eye on include epilepsy, Addison’s Disease, Cushing’s Disease, bloat, hypothyroidism, Von Willebrand’s Disease, patellar luxation, heart problems, skin problems, joint dysplasia, and Legg-Perthe’s Disease.
Epilepsy is also best known as seizures in dogs and can occur in your Havapoo. Often, you will not see signs of this condition until the pup is older – about two years of age. Epilepsy does not always need to be managed with medication, but if the situation is severe and the seizures are violent, medication may be necessary.
Addison’s Disease is passed down from the parent breeds of the puppy and occurs when the adrenal gland does not produce enough corticosteroids. This causes the pup’s body not to function normally.
Cushing’s Disease is another disease that is passed down from the parents, but this disease usually crops up in older, senior dogs. This disease also affects the adrenal gland and is present when there is a benign tumor on the pituitary gland.
Your pup may develop bloat and this is a serious condition that can be fatal when not treated properly. Bloat occurs when your pup has too much gas or air inside of his or her stomach. This air causes the stomach to expand and place unnecessary pressure in places it does not need to be. This pressure causes organs to act inefficiently and may block blood flow.
Hypothyroidism occurs in many breeds of dogs and this condition affects the thyroid. When present, your pup will either become obese or will be unable to gain weight properly.
Von Willebrand’s Disease is an inherited condition that happens when your pup’s platelets cannot clot blood due to a lack of proteins in the platelets.
A knee dislocation, or patellar luxation, often occurs in small breed dogs and is not a stranger to the Havapoo. This dislocation is painful, and your pup may hold his or her leg off the ground and hop to walk.
Heart and skin problems may present themselves in your pup and can range from a simple allergy to a severe condition such as heart disease. If you notice that your pup is acting strange or his or her health is deteriorating, you should call your veterinarian right away.
Elbow and hip joint dysplasia may affect your pup. Elbow dysplasia affects the front limbs, and hip dysplasia affects the lower limbs of your Havapoo. Both are painful.
Legg-Perthe’s Disease is passed down from the parent breeds to your pup and is present when the hip joint, specifically the head of the femur, degenerates over time. This can cause joint and bone inflammation in your Havapoo and it is very painful.
The Havapoo has a life expectancy of 10 to 14 years.
Temperament & Train-ability
The Havapoo is known to be a loving dog and you will find that your pup is always nearby. Sometimes, you may even find yourself tripping over him or her when you try to walk around in your house because of how attached this breed can be.
Your Havapoo is a smart dog and is considered easy to train. You will not have too much difficulty when it comes to training as your Havapoo is eager to please and see you happy. While you may become frustrated at any point during the training process, you want to avoid yelling or becoming agitated because your pup will not respond to it at all.
This breed is known to do well with children, but may not have the temperament for rough, young children, so be cautious. Other pets in the home are not a problem, especially when they have all been raised together.
Your Havapoo is somewhat active, but it a good choice for an apartment or condo. You will find that some mental and physical stimulation in your home and a good walk per day is enough for your pup to calm down.
One great quality about this breed is that he or she will entertain you and perform tricks and antics that keep you on your toes and giggling. In fact, when your pup sees you laughing, he or she will try even harder to make you keep smiling.
Grooming
The Havapoo is easy to groom and does not shed a lot. This breed is considered to be hypoallergenic, so you do not have to worry about an allergy flare up. You do want to make sure that you brush your pup daily to remove any snarls in his or her coat.
When it comes to bathing, you only need to bathe your pup when he or she really needs it. You should choose a mild shampoo to protect your pup’s skin.
To prevent a buildup of earwax and dirt, clean your pup’s ears once per week with a cleansing solution and cotton ball. You also need to trim your pup’s nails once per month to prevent them from growing too long.
Diet
Your Havapoo will consume anywhere between 1 1/2 cup to 2 1/2 cups of food per day. You should ideally split this amount into two meals. When you select a dry food, look for a brand that uses all natural ingredients and does not rely on fillers.
