Health & Longevity

Average Life Span: 12-15 years
The Corgi Husky Mix has a great lifespan. Like all hybrid breeds, this mix is less prone to hereditary health issues than his purebred counterparts, but there is still a possibility that health problems can from either parent breed continue on into the Corgi Husky Mix.

Hip dysplasia, a degenerative condition caused by a malformed hip joint, may affect some Corgi Huskies. Hip dysplasia can lead to discomfort, pain, limping, and, in the most severe cases, arthritis or even lameness. Surgery may be required in some situations. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not breed, so ensure your prospective puppy’s parents have no history of the condition. Although it is hereditary, hip dysplasia can be triggered by rapid weight gain and injury. While your pup’s joints are still developing, do not allow him to run on potentially slippery floors or jump excessively.

Von Willebrand’s disease, a blood clotting problem, can impact some Corgi Huskies. Von Willebrand’s occurs when there is an insufficient amount of von Willebrand’s factor, which aids in the blood clotting process. This can result in excessive, uncontrollable bleeding, even from minor cuts or injuries. Blood transfusions may be required to treat such episodes.

The Corgi Husky Mix may experience eye issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, corneal dystrophy, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). PRA is the gradual degeneration of the retina, ultimately resulting in failed daytime vision. Although there is no cure for PRA, affected dogs generally continue to lead happy lives and the gradual nature of the disease allows them to adjust to failing vision. Corneal dystrophy refers to unusual substances such as lipids and cholesterol crystals accumulating in the cornea. Although this sometimes has no real effect on dogs, it can be painful and may lead to significant vision impairment.

The Corgi Husky Mix may also be prone to back injuries, similar to his Corgi parent, so do not allow him to jump from excessive heights or otherwise risk damaging his back. Other possible issues include obesity, skin problems, and epilepsy.

The average lifespan for the Corgi Husky Mix is 12-15 years.

Temperament & Train-ability

Like all hybrid breeds, the temperament of a Corgi Husky can vary, because he may exhibit any combination of characteristics common to his parent breeds. However, the average Horgi is affectionate, friendly, and a devoted family companion. He is also intelligent, playful, and energetic. Both parents are known as herding or working dogs, so the Corgi Husky Mix is generally athletic, alert, and somewhat independent.

The Corgi Husky Mix is a high-energy dog who needs a minimum of one long, brisk walk or run on a daily basis, as well as plenty of active playtime. He also enjoys swimming, playing fetch, and running around with other dogs. This breed can live in an apartment as long as his exercise and playing needs are met, but a large, fenced-in yard is a bonus. Without adequate playtime, exercise, and opportunities to run freely, the Corgi Husky Mix is likely to become destructive and potentially disobedient. Although he can tolerate warm climates, the Corgi Husky does best in colder weather.

Generally, the Corgi Husky Mix gets along well with children and other pets if he is raised with them. Proper socialization can also ensure this behavior. Teach your children to respect the dog as well as his space and belongings. The Horgi is friendly with strangers and is therefore not a good watchdog. For best results, socialize your Corgi Husky Mix early and often by exposing him to a variety of people, pets, places, sights, and sounds.

Training the Corgi Husky Mix is not always an easy task. Although he is intelligent and eager to please, he does have a stubborn streak. It is important that you clearly establish yourself as the leader. You must be absolutely firm and consistent in enforcing your rules and expectations. Use positive reinforcement by motivating him with extra playtime, favorite treats, and verbal encouragement. Overall, this breed is very trainable if you can employ these techniques. Housebreaking a Corgi Husky Mix may be a difficult endeavor that will require plenty of time and patience. Crate training is recommended.

Grooming

The Corgi Husky Mix sheds quite a bit throughout the year, so be prepared for the possibility of extensive vacuuming. Daily brushing is recommended to minimize shedding and reduce the amount of loose hairs in the Corgi Huskies coat.

Bathe the Corgi Huskies water-resistant coat only as needed, and trim his nails when they grow long enough to reach the floor. Check his ears regularly and clean them with a solution and cotton ball to ensure they do not get infected. Brush his teeth every other day to prevent bad breath and maintain good overall health.

Diet

On average, the Corgi Husky Mix should consume 1.5-2.5 cups of high quality dry dog food daily, preferably split into at least two smaller meals. The Corgi Husky is prone to both obesity and back problems, so watch his weight and consumption. Do not overfeed him. Look for a food with wholesome, natural ingredients and avoid those with filler and by-products.

Be sure to get a water bowl and keep it topped up so your Corgi Husky Mix has access to water as he pleases.
