Health & Longevity

Average Life Span: 12-15 years
The Bassetoodle is a hybrid breed comprised of the Basset Hound and the Poodle. This breed is considered healthy and only has two major health concerns, which are epilepsy and bloat. There are some secondary health conditions to keep an eye out for which include joint dysplasia, allergies, ear infections, obesity, and eye problems.

The Bassetoodle may have epilepsy which means that your pup will probably experience seizures. The frequency of them can vary and they can either be mild or violent. Sometimes, the seizures may need medical intervention.

Bloat is another condition that your pup may suffer from and this condition can be fatal when it is not handled in a timely manner. Bloat occurs when your pup has too much air in his or her stomach. This causes the stomach to expand and place pressure on the organs around it.

Joint dysplasia can happen in the elbow, hip, or both. If this occurs, your pup will experience pain caused by unnecessary pressure placed on either the hip or elbow joint.

Allergies are no stranger to the Bassetoodle and you may notice that your pup sneezes or has a skin condition. If you happen to notice these things, you should have your dog screened to see if he or she is allergic to anything allowing you to set a course of action where you avoid these things in your dog’s life.

Ear infections are common in dogs who have floppy ears and your Bassetoodle is likely to have them. If you want to prevent them, make sure that you clean your pup’s ear once to twice a week. You should use warm water and a cleansing solution from the pet store.

The Bassetoodle has a tendency to become obese, especially if he or she does not receive enough exercise. If you think that your pup is becoming obese, talk to your veterinarian about what you can do. Often, all you need to do is switch out their dog food, but in some cases, your pup may have a thyroid condition.

Lastly, your pup may suffer from eye problems and these problems can range from a simple eye infection to cataracts or even blindness. It is important that you pay attention to your pup’s eye health and if you notice any issues, report them to your veterinarian immediately.

The Bassetoodle’s life expectancy is 12 to 15 years.

Temperament & Train-ability

The Bassetoodle is known as a dog that is perfect for families, loyal, loving, and playful. You will find that your pup is often curious and may explore your home more than you would like him or her to. You need to make sure you pick up any bags, shoes, and any other items off of the floor as they may become too curious and try to dig into these items.

You will likely find yourself laughing when it comes to your Bassetoodle. He or she is comical and will keep you on your toes. Once your pup gets going, it’s game on and you can expect him or her to runt through the house, slide around, and enjoy himself or herself.

While your pup is often curious, he or she may be a bit scared of new items and objects brought into the home, so you want to keep this in mind.

The Bassetoodle is loyal to those that it loves and you will find that your pup wants to cuddle and spend time with you. Your pup will find one way or another to place his or her body on you and always be near you.

The Bassetoodle is great with kids, even young ones and will get along with other pets in the home as well. You want to socialize them early on to ensure this, but you should not run into a problem along the way.

Your pup will need exercise outdoors and should be walked at least twice per day. With enough mental and physical stimulation, your dog will settle down and sleep well through the night.

The Bassetoodle is considered easy to train and will work hard to please you. There are some instances where you may run into a stubborn side in your pup and he or she may not perform as well as they once did, but this is only temporary.

Grooming

Your Bassetoodle is not considered to be a dog that needs a lot of grooming, but you should brush his or her hair at least once per day. You will notice that your pup sheds and to help ease the hair in your home, you need to brush more often than not.

You will need to bathe your pup a few times per month to keep him or her clean and also to remove any tangles and mats from his or her hair.

It is important to watch how your pup’s hair grows as they often need additional trimming around the eyes, mouth, and buttocks area. If you are not comfortable cutting your pet’s coat, you can take him or her into the groomers.

In addition to bathing your pup, you will need to clean his or her ears once per week and trim his or her nails once per month.

Diet

Your Bassetoodle will eat anywhere between 3/4 cup and 1 1/2 cups of dry food per day. You want to make sure you choose a brand of food that is high in protein and nutrients. You should look for a brand that offers natural, wholesome food and not chemicals and fillers.
