Health & Longevity

Average Life Span: 10-12 years
The Afador is a hybrid breed of the Labrador Retriever and the Afghan Hound. This breed is considered healthy and does not have any major health concerns. While there may not be any major concerns, there are some secondary medical concerns that you need to know about. When it comes to choosing a puppy, you want to work with a reputable Afador breeder to ensure that your puppy is happy and healthy. Some of the secondary concerns to watch out for include hip dysplasia, a low pain threshold, and eye problems.

Hip dysplasia is a condition that occurs when your pup’s hip joint is deformed or does not form properly. It can also occur when the hip joint does not fit correctly into the socket. Use of a hip joint that is deformed or not placed correctly can lead to the cartilage wearing down. This cartilage covers the joint to provide protection and when it is gone, there is unnecessary pressure placed on the hip joint. Hip dysplasia is a painful condition and you will notice that your pup may have trouble getting up and down.

Next, your Afador pup may show signs of a low pain threshold. What this means is that your pup is not as tolerant to pain as other breeds may be. You will often notice that your pup will squeal or whine more than usual and he or she may seem to get injured more often than not.

Lastly, your Afador may develop eye problems. These problems can range from a simple eye infection to blindness. If you think that your pup may have an eye problem, you should speak with your veterinarian and let them know, so that the condition can be monitored properly.

The Afador’s life expectancy is 10 to 12 years.

Temperament & Train-ability

The Afador is often described as a pup that is intelligent, well-mannered, and brave. You can expect your pup to be independent and not be afraid to explore areas of the home and yard on his or her own.

This breed is known to be intelligent and acts as such. You will find that it is easy to train this pup in general, but if your puppy takes on more of the Hound side then he may be a little off and independent when it comes to training.

As you do train your Afador, make sure that you are positive and consistent as a harsh or bad attitude will not yield you the results that you want.

Your Afador pup is going to have a lot of energy and does require a lot of time outdoors and two walks per day of about 30 minutes each. If you have children in your home, preferably older than ten, your pup will get along great with him or her and they can play outside and wear each other out.

One good thing about the Afador is that while it is energetic, it will calm down indoors and not be overly active. This pup does make a good watch dog and will alert you to danger. He or she is also wary of strangers, so a proper introduction between anyone you want in the house is important.

The Afador is loyal to those in his or her family and will show you the love that you want him or her to while still being able to go about his or her business and not be attached to your hip.

Grooming

Your Afador pup will require a lot of grooming attention, which needs to be done and not skipped. His coat does require a brushing of at least an hour a few times per week. You will find that it may be difficult to brush his or hair and you may want to have a groomer do it for you.

You need to bathe your Afador once per month. When you do bathe him or her, make sure you choose a shampoo that is soft and mild on the skin. In addition, you will need to clean your Afador’s ears once per week to remove any buildup of wax and dirt.

Your Afador does need to have his or her nails trimmed once per month or as often as needed to ensure that no overgrowth occurs. If it does, this can leave your pup in pain and the nails may split or break.

Diet

Your Afador pup will eat anywhere between 2 1/2 cups and 3 cups of food per day. You do need to feed your pup a good brand of dry food that can keep up with his or her weight and activity level.

When you look for a brand of dog food, you need to make sure that you choose one that is high in protein and low in calories to prevent obesity.

Also, the food should contain wholesome and natural ingredients and not fillers and chemicals. If you need any recommendations for dog food, speak with your veterinarian.
