The Boston Huahua is a unique mixture of a Chihuahua and a Boston Terrier. Health-wise, this is a great combination because both parent breeds are amongst the healthier small dogs. Therefore, there are minor health issues, but the Boston Huahua is usually very healthy. Some of the biggest health concerns for this crossbreed are:

Deafness

For some Boston Huahuas, deafness is hereditary, as a result of the Boston Terrier genetics. This is easier to deal with because the pup has never heard anything before. Otherwise, deafness can be caused by ear canal trauma, severe earwax blockages, or severe, untreated ear infections. This condition is usually permanent, but vets can salvage what hearing is left by cleaning out a pup’s ears and prescribing antibiotics to get rid of an infection.

Heart Arrhythmia

This heart defect is an irregular heartbeat that makes a Boston Huahua unable to exert itself past a certain heart rate. This condition is usually diagnosed through a routine vet check-up, but it is confirmed with an EKG. Sometimes a respiratory infection can cause heart arrhythmia in dogs. If that is that case, vets can prescribe antibiotics to clear the infection before it damages the heart. Or, if the arrhythmia is congenital, you have to keep a close eye on your pup. Don’t let them run too fast, play too hard, or do anything that could result in a very high, hard heart rate.

Other minor health issues that your Boston Huahua might be susceptible to includes eye problems, skin allergies, and kidney problems. The typical lifespan for a Boston Huahua is 12-15 years, but they have been known to live a couple of years longer if they’re healthy.

Temperament & Train-ability

Where Boston Terriers are notorious for being stubborn, Chihuahuas are commonly snippy towards small children and other dogs. Your Boston Huahua may inherit one or both of these traits, but she’ll also inherit natural curiosity, a keen intelligence, and a loving disposition towards her owner.

You can train your Boston Huahua to be less stubborn and less snippy. All you need is persistence, confidence, determination, and a clear, concise voice. Instruct your Boston Huahua to behave with simple commands and gestures that she will understand. Be firm but gentle in telling her what to do or what not to do. She needs to respect you as her pack leader, which means your confidence level needs to hold her attention.

For good behavior during training, always reward your Boston Huahua. Use treats, praise, and encouragement to show her she did the right thing. If you see negative behaviors, or if she refuses to listen to your commands, continue to work with her until she comprehends your instructions. Never, ever raise your hand or voice to a dog. Negativity breeds negativity. If you use harshness towards your Boston Huahua, she is likely to become untrusting, aggressive, and stronger willed.

Grooming

Boston Huahuas aren’t very demanding when it comes to their grooming needs. They often have a combination of short, sleek hair from their parent breeds. Both the Chihuahua and Boston Terrier are known for their short-haired, easy-care coats. Shedding usually only occurs in hot weather. It’s best to brush your Boston Huahua 2 times a week in the spring, autumn, and winter, but amp it up to once a day in the summer.

Use a dog shampoo on your Boston Huahua to preserve the natural balance of oils on her skin. Our shampoos, even if it’s child’s shampoo, strips the oils, leaving her skin unprotected from infection and harmful bacteria. Bathe her when she needs it, which will be once a month or so.

Trim her nails once a month. If you feel uncomfortable trimming your Boston Huahua’s toenails, ask a professional groomer to show you how it’s done.

Diet

Boston Huahuas are small with big personalities. They have quite an appetite, as well. This means they can easily overeat if given the opportunity. To keep your pup’s weight and health under control, feed her on a routine schedule. Divide 1 cup of dry kibble into two meals per day. The multiple meals will keep her satisfied and full, so she won’t come begging to you whenever you sit down for dinner.

If you are going to invest in treats, make sure those meaty morsels are bite-sized for a small dog. Treats that are too big could cause your Boston Huahua to choke or vomit. Stick with soft, wholesome rewards for good behavior.
